I have recently been taking a close look at mosses and the microscopic worlds that surround them. Some of these structures and organisms are just out of our visual reach and I have been making them visible using both the confocal and a simple 1970s student microscope. Others can be seen just by looking very closely. The role of these modest plants, particularly sphagnum, in storage of both water and carbon is huge. Mosses help fight air pollution, colonise bare ground paving the way for other plants to grow and can reduce the risk and severity of flooding

I am a photographer who enjoys making photographs as well as taking them and often make cyanotypes and lumen prints using the sun to make the exposure. The unpredictability of this interests me and I enjoy teaching others the process. I am enthralled too by pollinators and the plants they visit. The variety of these indispensable creatures is fascinating and I find spending time with them very relaxing. They help put things into proportion.

I graduated in Nov 2023 from an MFA in Art, Science & Visual Thinking. With a degree in Biological Imaging and a background in medical and forensic photography as well as environmental work, I have recently been looking at worlds within worlds. I am fascinated by mosses and the worlds in and around them, particularly mosses of peat bogs. 

Detail, texture, fragility and the infinite beauty of nature interest me as well as our entanglement as humans with the non-human. I am primarily a photographer but have been working with bronze, glass and video during my Masters as well as collecting sounds.

I regularly run workshops in the cyanotype and argyrotypeprocess with adults and young artists as well as pinhole camera workshops.

I enjoy working with Museums, having collaborated with Bell Pettigrew Museum and MUSA in St Andrews University, Scottish Fisheries Museum, Brechin Townhouse Museum, Perth Museum and Gallery and Dundee Heritage Trust.
