Biography

BIO

I am a mixed media artist working primarily with wax and other materials to create a tactile surface. Using the ancient techniques of encaustic or cold wax combined with oil paint, powdered pigments, oil sticks, collage, ink and charcoal. The paintings are built up in layers, the surface scratched and scraped, with previous layers being revealed. An intuitive process as each layer of the painting responds to the last and informs the next.

The works evolve from a direct response to landscapes. They portray my connection with these ancient places. Richness of colour, texture, worn paths, signs of people who once have been - the paintings evoke an emotional response to the land, creating mood, atmosphere and connection with the place.

Inspiration
I have a deep connection with the landscape, especially the highlands where I now live and work, I spend many hours walking, sitting and drawing. Something I have done since a child, sitting in trees gazing at the streams and endless skies, building dens, mooching on the shorelines of the Welsh North coast and mountains. I am fascinated with the history of the place, it’s geology and it’s people. I love to walk the ancient paths and see the traces our ancestors have left.

Since graduating from Sheffield Hallam University, school of art in 1993, I, along with three other women formed the art collective, Eclectic Works, exhibiting and offering creative opportunities in the community. I have held a studio in Sheffield as part of Yorkshire Artspace Studios and have been part of many group shows and curated at the galleries there a member of a collaborative group of seventeen painters, 'Painterly Exchange.  Working on many creative projects in the community and as an arts tutor.

I currently live and work on the Isle of Skye, from Eunoia Studio. I have open studios all year round, Show my work through the Skyeworks Gallery,  I was shortlisted for the Highland Prize in 2022.

I also run on-line classes, and regular workshops from my studio, painting & drawing from the Land, Art & Nature, Sketching and host a local art group.
