I have been a photographer for years, having studied Biological Imaging then worked in Medical and Police Photography. Having subsequently studied Environmental Management and worked in environmental organisations for some years, I moved back into photography on arriving in Fife. I slowly began my creative practice in 2015, gratefully supported by Bell Pettigrew Museum and St Andrews University. This led to Skyward exhibition which set me off on a creative trajectory working with museums and their collections. My practice grew as did teaching workshops in various photographic processes. Community and participatory work is now a central part of my freelance work. I love to collaborate and share processes and I work with schools and charities and with festivals and museums.
I enrolled on the MFA in 2022 to interrogate and develop my practice, work out where I was going and to expand my skills and knowledge as well as my network for potential collaboration. I now consider myself an artist researcher and want to continue with research at the heart of my practice. During the MFA I gained new skills and worked with new materials such as bronze, moving image, sound and glass. Process is central to my practice and I often enjoy interrogating processes as much as completing work. I am interested in research being carried out by Sustainable Darkroom and am incorporating new ideas into my darkroom practice to reduce toxic outputs.
Underpinning everything I am fascinated by the natural world and interspecies entanglements. Nature is my constant inspiration and sometimes collaborator. I am drawn to the less glamorous plants, animals and other organisms that are often overlooked and perhaps difficult to see. I want to communicate this to others to help form deeper connection with our natural world, of which we are simply a small part.
